The city council gave its approval to sports betting in 2018, but the bill wasn’t signed into law until the following January. GambetDC, an offering run by the lottery and powered by Intralot, is the sole online and mobile option for bettors in the District since its launch in 2020. The Caesars Sportsbook app is only available in a geofenced area around Capital One Arena. It’s a unique situation as there are not expected to be any retail sportsbooks in the state.
Sportsbooks remained illegal, though, as did all forms of online gambling. Despite having several casinos to choose from, state residents couldn’t gamble online. Several attempts were made to regulate online gambling, but they faced considerable opposition from local casinos. You would usually place a futures bet at the start of a season for the final game.
Michigan legalized sports betting on December 20, 2019 when it passed HB 4916. There was a previous effort to legalize Michigan sports bettingin 2018, but the bill was vetoed by then-Governor Rick Snyder out of concern for the state’s School Aid Fund. The new bill addressed his concern with a healthy, but reasonable, 8.4% tax rate on sports betting revenues that will directly contribute to the School Aid Fund. There are currently 26 casinos throughout Michigan, and all will be authorized to open retail and online sportsbooks. New Mexico’s first tribal sportsbook accepts bets on both professional and collegiate sports.
So you won’t be breaking any laws if you reside in any other state and choose to bet with an offshore sportsbook. Virginia legalized sports betting, including online sportsbooks, on July 1st, 2020. Since then there have been many steps for the Virginia Lottery, the body overseeing the legalization process, having to approve regulations and licensing formats. Sportsbooks will be looking to team up with one of the 5 casino operators in the state to launch their online sports betting. However, those who do not team up will still have the opportunity to launch their app, they will just need separate approval from the Virginia Lottery Committee. Legal US online sports betting sites are all regulated and licensed by the same government entities that oversee retail casinos.
This left a void in many states’ book of codes and now each state is determining their own regulations and legality in general of the sports betting industry for their state alone. Tennessee unveiled their online and mobile sports betting industryon November 1, 2020, nearly 18 months after the pastime became legal. The law only allows for internet and mobile sports betting platforms, meaning no land-based locations are available as they are not specified as such within the law. Four sportsbook operators launched on the official date with more to come in the future.
Oregon will let those 18 years old or older to use the lottery’s mobile sportsbook known as Scoreboard. Some states that are working on sports betting legislation are aiming to set the legal gambling age at 18 as well. We will update you as soon as we have confirmation on which states do so. Online offshore sportsbooks will normally accept members 18 or older, but it is best to comply with the age requirement set by your state. Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes reached a groundbreaking deal in 2021 that will allow the pair plus the state lottery to open statewide mobile sportsbooks. Pennsylvania was among a handful of states to accept a legal retail sports bet in 2018 and, beginning with its 2019 digital launch, has been among the biggest markets in the country. New Jersey brought in $4.5 billion in sports bets in 2019 and is on track to bring in $5 billion in 2020, beating out Nevada in handle every month that year. A New York mobile launch could cut into these massive numbers, but New Jersey will still continue as a marquee market for years to come.
